Weather related claims hit home insurance policies the hardest
London, UK (PRWeb UK) 18 February, 2010 -- A new report has reveals the significant effect that weather can have on homes across the UK, as weather-related home insurance (http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/content1?catId=19300223&mediaId=19300229) claims now account for the largest percentage of total home insurance claims in the UK. With the Met Office stating that there is a 45 per cent chance that the weather will be colder than average this month, Post Office Home Insurance is recommending homeowners prepare their homes for continued wintery conditions.
The Mintel report shows that weather-related home insurance claims totalled £646m for the home insurance market last year . This is compared to £356m-worth of theft-related home insurance claims and £408m worth of fire-related home insurance claims.
In light of these statistics and the possibility of further cold weather, Post Office Home Insurance is advising homeowners to ensure they are prepared for a further freeze with a few preventative measures that may help homeowners to avoid damage to property.
To help minimise the risk of frozen or burst pipes, homeowners should ensure that all pipes and water tanks are well insulated. Homeowners should also ensure their boiler is in good working order and their heating is kept on for at least an hour a day during cold spells.
Post Office Home Insurance also suggests that pre-existing home insurance policy holders check what their home insurance policy covers. Some standard home insurance policies, for example, cover burst or frozen pipes but do not provide cover for boiler breakdowns. The Post Office's standard buildings home insurance policy offers cover on burst pipes and emergency boiler repairs.
